Supporting Our Local Business Community Through Economic & Trade Challenges

The Greater Kingston Chamber of Commerce (GKCC), alongside provincial and national Chambers, is actively working to support our business community in the face of evolving economic and trade challenges. We stand in full collaboration with the Ontario Chamber of Commerce (OCC) and the Canadian Chamber of Commerce (CCC) to address the impacts of potential tariffs and advocate for policies that strengthen our local economy.

The Greater Kingston Chamber of Commerce (GKCC) has long been committed to keeping our business community informed and prepared for economic shifts. Our annual Economic Outlook Event has always provided valuable insights, and this year, on February 20, 2025, we are placing a strong focus on the potential trade and economic challenges arising from the recent U.S. tariff discussions.

To ensure our members receive the most relevant and strategic insights, we are proud to welcome Stephen Tapp, Chief Economist for the Canadian Chamber of Commerce (CCC), as our keynote speaker. Stephen has been a leading voice in Canada’s response to Donald Trump’s proposed tariffs, advocating for policies that strengthen our economy, including the removal of interprovincial trade barriers to enhance domestic resilience.

Through this event and our ongoing efforts, the GKCC remains dedicated to equipping our business community with the knowledge, connections, and advocacy needed to navigate these evolving economic challenges with confidence.

How GKCC is Supporting Our Business Community
At the local level, we are taking proactive steps to ensure Kingston businesses have the resources, connections, and advocacy they need to navigate these challenges:

✔️ Member Engagement – We are launching a survey today to better understand the specific concerns and impacts on our local businesses. Your input will help shape our advocacy and response strategies.

✔️ Economic Outlook Event – We will be hosting roundtable discussions at our upcoming Economic Outlook event to collaborate on solutions and identify ways to support businesses in mitigating tariff-related challenges. REGISTER NOW

✔️ Shop Local & Strengthen Supply Chains – We encourage businesses to explore local sourcing opportunities, and support "Shop Local" initiatives to enhance economic resilience.

✔️ Advocating for Support & Solutions – We continue to push for financial assistance programs, trade barrier reductions, and local economic initiatives to help businesses adapt and thrive.

Advocacy & Action

Here are some key steps being taken at the provincial and national levels:

🔹 Ontario Business & Trade Leadership Coalition – The OCC has established a coalition of trade-dependent business leaders to provide strategic recommendations and advocate for Ontario businesses. This coalition met with Premier Ford on February 4, 2025, to discuss competitiveness and policy solutions.

🔹 Strengthening Interprovincial Trade – The OCC is leading a national effort, calling on premiers to remove trade barriers within Canada. Additionally, the federal government is being urged to act, with business leaders meeting with Minister Anita Anand to push for internal trade reforms.

🔹 U.S. Trade Advocacy – Since last summer, efforts have been underway to reinforce the importance of Ontario’s trade relationship with the U.S. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce has shown support for reducing tariffs and fostering a stable trade environment.

Looking Ahead

As Candace Laing, President & CEO of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, stated:
"Canada needs to focus on what we can control—building a resilient economy, diversifying trade partners, and dismantling internal trade barriers to keep goods and services flowing across the country. A strong, united, and competitive Canadian economy will thrive no matter what challenges arise."

We are committed to using our influence, connections, and resources to support our local businesses. Together, we will navigate these challenges and strengthen our economy for today, and in the future.
